Hyderabad: The State Minorities Commission has sent a show-cause notice to GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd over construction of a mosque on a land parcel within the airport premises.

17hydThe commission sent the notice on Monday acting on a petition filed by one Mohammed Riyaz, who had approached the minorities’ panel last month.

According to commission chairman Abid Rasool Khan, the petitioner sought its intervention claiming that scores of Muslims workers, including taxi drivers and porters are forced to pray out in the open in ‘harsh’ weather conditions.

Riyaz has identified himself as a khateeb (who delivers sermons) of the congregation. The petition suggested that as many as 300 Muslims pray on Fridays and around 60 on other days. In addition to sending the show cause notice, the commission also sought GMR’s reply to five questions which it described as “just and necessary to decide whether the commission should further inquire into the matter.”

It asked GMR authorities whether any gazetted waqf property has been “taken over or acquired”. The commission also sought clarification whether GMR authorities have provided employees a place to pray outside the terminal and whether GMR received representations on the issue from any public representatives for this.

In a separate letter to the Ranga Reddy district collectorate, the commission sought clarity on the nature of a land parcel of about 2,000 square yards near the airport entrance which was earmarked for the construction of a mosque.

“It appears that the land parcel was identified for construction around five years ago but possession was not taken. If the there is no change in the nature and use of this land parcel, a committee can be formed to take up mosque construction there,” Khan said.

No such show-cause notice from the commission has been received thus far, the spokesperson added. Places of worship in “close proximity” of the RGIA exist for those who work at the airport, the spokesperson claimed.

The GMR authorities at the airport had received a similar request for the construction of a mosque in 2013. However, this had to be turned down on account of security reasons, GHIAL added. (timesofindia)
